Just as I got to the marsh on the trail yesterday, a guy pedaling by on his bike said, “The Great Blue is posing for you just down the way.” Sure enough, there he was! He was the main star of the show for the day.
I have to say, this pond is the best camouflage for Green Herons. If they don’t fly about, it is very difficult to spot them. Without binoculars, almost impossible, unless you spot the white stripe on their throat. I watched this one fly in and hop from stump to stump, looking for the most advantageous hunting spot.
Up above, pecking loudly, was a baby (juvenile) Red Bellied Woodpecker. By the time I got it in my sights, it was settling in for a well-deserved break, stretching out its wings and possibly airing out its feathers to get rid of any parasites. It will get its head feathers in due time, I’m told!
There was also a little Phoebe catching lots of bugs. The only good shot, unfortunately, was “senza” bug!
