A day of subdued lighting, Aug. 5

The garden flowers looked lovely this morning on this otherwise dreary day. The hummingbird moths were on full display.

Late in the afternoon I went down to the marsh to see what was going on. A Great Blue Heron nabbed himself a frog and flew to the other side of the pond to eat it in peace. I still spied on him though. In the chronological pictures below you can see the procedure for eating frog! He tossed it about for several minutes and then put it down for a minute or so. I presume it was dead! He then picked it back up and began the long process of trying to get it to go down head first – with no hands to help out. He looked pretty satisfied with his supper.

And in between shots of the heron, the little Kingbird showed off its lovely tail feathers and turned its head 180 degrees as if daring me to take its picture.
