The Eurasian Kingfisher

This bird is also known as the Common Kingfisher. In Germany it’s call an Eisvogel (Ice bird.)

I was so surprised to actually see one. Compared to our Belted Kingfishers, which I love, this one is shockingly stunning with its emerald blue. They are smaller, round shaped birds (6-7 inches long) and apparently no longer nearly as common as the name implies. I couldn’t believe that my first view of him was with a fish when the lake was almost entirely frozen. He was only there for 2 days and then I saw him no more.

Day one: with fish, but tucked away in the middle of a bush to eat it safely!
