Monteverde Orchid Garden and more Hummingbirds

More special out of the way places in the Monteverde Region

A total delight was the Orchard Garden Tour where we were handed a magnifying glass as the tour began. That is because their speciality is the miniature orchids found in the region. These minis are all perfect little orchids – but ones you will never notice! I am posting them here, smallest to largest. One thing that amazed me was learning how the flowers attract exactly the pollinators they need by the odor they emit, of course, but also the time of day they emit that odor – only when the target insect is out and about. So some are odorless until the heat of mid-day and others in the night. It is astonishing how well the symbiosis works!

Armed with my 100mm lens this time, we went back to the Hummingbird Cafe. I guess I think the pictures are a bit better than with the long lens. It was certainly easier to manage!

While visiting the rain forest, we only had one sunset without rain. We went out for a drink and dinner and here are the birds who kept us company! Kingbirds, a Kiskadee, and a little, very noisy, Rufous-collared sparrow.

Some other sightings on this day: a banana plant with the longest “rope” we saw (the purple bit at the bottom is the flower), a coati eating berries, and 2 beautiful damsel flies.
