Tanzania, day 4 – big cats

Lazy lions, lolly-gagging about, and mother and cub having a nice afternoon.

So excited, not, to see 14 lionesses having a rest, the only excitement being that occasionally one would raise her head or lick herself.

Our next lion encounter was with 2 yawning males, one too sleepy to even bother yawning! I’m posting this large group of shots because the yawning just went on and on and I thought it was pretty funny! (The shots are all in sequence – no repeats.) And the last picture – OMG, could a lion look more bored?

However, that same day we came upon a mother and cub that were really sweet to follow for about 30 minutes. When we first saw her on the rock, it wasn’t even apparent that there was a cub but if you look closely, there are two little tufts (ears) sticking up out of the grass. After a while she left and the cub tried to follow, struggling to scramble up on a branch before finally joining its mother. We drove around to get a better view of the two of them, and those are the cutest pictures of all, I think.

On the mound

On the move

On the large branch together

What could be more iconic than a single cheetah on a termite hill? Apparently it just wanted to take a nap.

Finally, maybe equally iconic is the single leopard in a tree. Then it climbed down into the tall grass, never to be seen again.
